Δύο διεθνώς γνωστοί ωκεανογράφοι στο ΙΤΕ

Το Εργαστήριο Παράκτιας και Θαλάσσιας Έρευνας, του Ινστιτούτου Υπολογιστικών Μαθηματικών του ΙΤΕ, με τη ευκαιρία της παρουσίας δύο διεθνώς γνωστών ωκεανογράφων στο εργαστήριο για συνεργασία, των Καθ. Georgy Shapiro, από το Πανεπιστήμιο του Plymouth της Αγγλίας και του Δρα. Γιώργου Ζωδιάτη, από τον ΜΚΟ ΟRΙΟΝ-Joint Research and Development Center της Κύπρου, σας καλεί στο Ωκεανογραφικό colloquium, την Τρίτη 20 Νοεμβρίου 2018, ώρες 9:30-12:00, στην Αίθουσα Ορφανουδάκη, στο κεντρικό κτήριο του ΙΤΕ.

 

Η επιχειρησιακή ωκεανογραφία παίζει σημαντικό ρόλο στη σωστή διαχείριση του θαλάσσιου περιβάλλοντος, την κατανόηση των πιέσεων από την κλιματική αλλαγή και επίσης αποτελεί τη βάση πάνω στην οποία στηρίζεται η επιχειρησιακή πρόβλεψη, η έγκαιρη προειδοποίηση και διαχείριση του επαυξημένου κινδύνου από μεγάλα περιστατικά θαλάσσιας ρύπανσης, ειδικότερα  σε περιοχές όπως η περίπτωση της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου με επαυξημένες τα τελευταία χρόνια δραστηριότητες που αφορούν την εξόρυξη υδρογονανθράκων και τις θαλάσσιες μεταφορές (όπως ο διάπλους supertankers μετά την διαπλάτυνση της διώρυγας του Σουέζ).

 

Όσον δε αφορά τα περιστατικά θαλάσσιας ρύπανσης από πετρελαιοειδή, ειδικότερα αυτά που επηρεάζουν τις παράκτιες περιοχές, η χρήση των αποτελεσμάτων της ωκεανογραφικής πρόγνωσής στην έγκαιρη προειδοποίηση των αρμόδιων αρχών είναι καθοριστικής σημασίας για την λήψη μέτρων προστασίας, καθώς η παράκτια ζώνη είναι φυσικός πόρος ανάπτυξης του νησιωτικού τουρισμού, όπως στη περίπτωση της Κρήτης. Στις περιπτώσεις αυτές η υπολογιστική μοντελοποίηση γίνεται πολύπλοκη και απαιτητική, πεδίο όπου το Εργαστήριο Παράκτιας και Θαλάσσιας Έρευνας, διαθέτει  εμπειρία και τεχνογνωσία και συνεργάζεται με σχετικά ευρωπαϊκά ερευνητικά και επιχειρησιακά δίκτυα (MONGOOS, MEDSLIK-ΙΙ Consortium, κα.).

Dr. George Zodiatis

  • is a senior Oceanographer with research work and teaching experience in European research centers and Universities.
  • His research experience is focused mainly in the fields of physical oceanography.
  • The last 15 years he has been heavily involved in the development of the operational oceanography in the Mediterranean, particularly within the framework of the Copernicus marine component  projects (former known as Global Monitoring for Environment and Security , MyOceans).
  • is a co-developer of the CYCOFOS- Cyprus Coastal Ocean Forecasting and Observing System, known to be the first operational coastal forecasting system in the Mediterranean, providing sea forecasts since early 2002.
  • Moreover, is a co-developer of an advance well established oil spill and trajectory predictions system known as MEDSLIK, a system that has been used by European and International key agencies, such  as the European Maritime Safety Agency-EMSA and REMPEC and several national agencies and EU projects throughout the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
  • he has been participated as a principal investigator in more than 45 research projects, most of them funded by the European Commission, and in many other projects as a research collaborator.  
  • He has been for many years a member of International and European organizations related to  operational oceanography and marine research , such as the CIESM, IODE/IOC, EuroGOOS, GOOS. He  is a co-Convener of the European Geosciences Union General Assembly Session OS4.7 Marine Pollution Assessment, Predictions and Risk Mapping for the years 2016, 2017 , 2018 and 2019 .
  • he has more than a 150 publications in European and United States scientific journals, such as the: Deep Sea Research, Ocean Science, Scientific Report (Nature publishing Group), proceedings of international conferences, monographs  and chapters in books published by Springer.
  • he has been participated in more than a 100 international conferences and dedicated workshops as invited and regular oral lecturer on topics related to ocean observation and numerical modeling, marine data management, marine environment and marine downstream applications.
